Scholarship Exam Timeline for 2027 Entry: When Does Prep Actually Start?
July 12, 2026
If your child is aiming at a Year 7 scholarship for 2027 entry, the single most useful thing to know is the shape of the calendar — because the families who find it stressful are almost always the ones who discovered it too late. Here's how the year runs, and where you are on it right now.
Most independent schools open scholarship applications between August and October of the year before entry — that is, August–October 2026 for 2027 entry. Some close within weeks. The exams themselves cluster from February to May 2027; every school publishes its own dates, and they genuinely do change year to year, so build your own list from your two or three target schools' websites and check it monthly. (Selective-entry government schools run separate state calendars again.)
Working backwards from a February–May exam gives you the honest prep timeline. Twelve to nine months out is diagnosis: one untimed mock paper to find the two weakest sections, and a gentle rhythm of one or two short sessions a week. Nine to six months out is building: weakness-targeted practice, a daily reading habit, and a timed writing task each fortnight. Six to three months out is consolidation: mixed-section practice under real time pressure with monthly progress checks. The final three months are simulation: full timed mocks at exam cadence, error review, and a deliberate taper in the last fortnight — sleep beats cramming, every time.
Notice what that timeline implies: for a February–May 2027 exam, the ideal starting window is right now through to the end of the year. Not because more months of grinding are better — burnout is real, and an 11-year-old who's been drilled for two years walks in flat — but because starting early is what makes short, calm sessions sufficient. The panic-prep alternative crams the same hours into ten stressful weeks.
One more date-related tip: put the application deadlines in your own calendar with a fortnight's margin, including the supporting documents (school reports, sometimes NAPLAN results). Every year, well-prepared kids miss out because a parent discovered a closing date after it passed.
If you want the working version of this plan, our free 12-month prep timeline PDF breaks it into a printable month-by-month checklist, and the free practice paper will tell you which sections to point it at.
